Measles

  • Incubation period = Approx 10 days (range 7-21 days)
  • The prodromal period lasts approximately 3 days and is characterized by fever, malaise, and anorexia, followed by conjunctivitis (non-exudative), coryza, and cough.
  • The skin rash develops approx 14 days after exposure. — PICTURES —
    • Erythematous blanching maculopapular lesions that rapidly coalesce.
    • Typically starts behind the ears and at the hairline before spreading from head down and centrifugally.
    • SPARES PALMS AND SOLES
    • Koplik Spots: — PICTURES —
      • Pathognomonic for measles infection and occur about 48 hours before the characteristic exanthem.
      • Does not appear in all patients.
